PURPOSE I used this tab early on as a mental scaffolding of sorts in working through this book. SCOPE Here I convert a couple of the basic exercises from Galpert's book Forward Motion translated into the closed fingerings for the scales based on G major. These exercises explore how to create a strong melody line using chord tones. I also found that it made practicing the various scales (Mixolydian, Phrygian, etc.) more interesting because of instead of just running up and down the scales I'm working on fragments that I can hopefully internalize and utilize later. This tab locates sequences of four-note groupings for each position in which the 1st and 3rd beats coincide with a chord tone. The basic strategy is to figure out, for each position, how to get to a major chord tone from above or below. These exercises focus on chord tones such as the root, 3rd, fifth, or 7th (or flatted 3rd or flatted 7th). NOTES: One cannot execute the same length runs offered in many of the Forward Motion book's exercises while remaining within a single closed position on the 5-string banjo. In these cases I use an open string in order to transition from one part of the fretboard to another. CAVEAT: If there are gross errors please contact me, otherwise I probably won't maintain this tab going forwards. I highly recommend that the highly interested and self-motivated reader refer to the book that inspired this tab. REFERENCES: Forward Motion: From Bach to Bebop. Hal Galper, 2003.
